Scientists created a hemp plastic alternative that withstands boiling water and stretches up to 1,600%

Scientists have developed a promising new type of plastic made from hemp, offering a greener alternative to conventional petroleum-based packaging materials.

The material comes from Cannabis sativa, a plant long used for industrial purposes but distinct from drug varieties because it does not produce intoxicating effects.

Researchers created a stretchy hemp-based thermoplastic that can expand up to 1,600 percent of its original size while still maintaining strength and flexibility. It also has an unusually high glass transition temperature, meaning it stays stable and durable even when exposed to boiling water.

According to a study published in Chem Circularity, this heat resistance is rare among plastics made from natural sources. One of the study’s co-authors, University of Connecticut professor Gregory Sotzing, noted that very few bio based plastics can match this level of performance.

The research team also explored replacing bisphenol A, a common industrial chemical used in many plastics, with compounds derived from hemp such as cannabidiol. Bisphenol A has been widely criticized as a potential endocrine disruptor that may interfere with hormonal systems.

The hemp based material shows potential for use in transparent films, coatings, and packaging. These are applications currently dominated by petroleum based plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate, which is used in water bottles, food packaging, and flexible electronics.

A major breakthrough in the study is that the hemp derived polymer can be processed in ways that make it suitable for real world manufacturing. This includes being melted, shaped, and stretched without losing its structural integrity.

Researchers also highlighted environmental concerns linked to traditional plastics, which rely heavily on fossil fuels and contribute to microplastic pollution. These tiny particles can accumulate in water, air, and food systems and have been linked to potential health risks.

Compared to many plant based alternatives, hemp shows advantages in performance, particularly in heat resistance and elasticity. Many bio plastics struggle to match the durability of conventional plastics or are too costly for large scale use.

The study also notes that while current global production of hemp derived compounds is not yet sufficient to replace all plastic materials, cultivation of hemp is expanding due to its versatility. The plant grows quickly, requires relatively low water input, and can be rotated with common crops like corn and soybeans, making it attractive for farmers.

Researchers believe that further development could allow hemp based plastics to be used in medical applications such as coatings for catheters and drug delivery systems, in addition to packaging and industrial materials.

Work is ongoing to improve the mechanical strength of the material and to scale up production methods, with the goal of making hemp based plastics a practical alternative to conventional plastics in the future.
