WHAT IS CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second most common active ingredient in cannabis. While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is extracted from the hemp plant, a cousin of marijuana. CBD is one of hundreds of components in cannabis.

CBD, an abbreviation of cannabidiol, was first discovered in 1940 by Roger Adams.

CBD cannot get you high but is found in both hemp and marijuana.

EPIDIOLEX is the first and only FDA-approved prescription cannabidiol (CBD) to treat seizures.

THE BENEFITS

Studies so far have shown many health benefits of CBD and more are still being discovered. Some of these benefits include anxiety and neurological disorders. It may also benefit heart health, help relieve certain types of pain and have benefits to your skin.

A few studies suggest that CBD may help with substance abuse disorders, mental health disorders, and certain types of cancers. It may benefit heart health in several ways by reducing blood pressure and improving artery function.

Too add, CBD may be effective for treating seizures related to several health conditions. The prescription CBD product ‘Epidiolex’ has received FDA approval to treat seizures related to rare, seizure-causing conditions such as Dravet syndrome.

THE USES OF CBD

CBD can be infused to so many different products. From foods to beverages, dietary supplements, and body care products, these are often marketed as a way to improve stress, pain, and sleep issues.

The most common way people consume CBD is orally, usually placing the oil under the tongue. It is used to treat chronic pain, anxiety, inflammation, and insomnia.

CBD may relieve pain by affecting receptors of the endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate pain, mood, and memory, in addition to many other physiological and cognitive functions.

WHAT IS A CANNABINOID

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in the Cannabis plant. Of over 480 different compounds present in the plant, only around 66 are termed cannabinoids.

The most well known among these compounds is the delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. Cannabidiol (CBD) is another important component, which makes up about 40% of the plant resin extract. THC gets you high, CBD doesn’t.

Cannabinoids interact with specific cannabinoid receptors present on the surface of cells. These receptors are found in different parts of the central nervous system and the two main types of cannabinoid receptors in the body are CB1 and CB2.

the endocannabinoid system

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex cell-signaling system identified in the early 1990s by researchers. To this day, experts are still trying to fully understand the ECS. As of now, we know it plays a role in regulating a range of functions and processes, including: sleep, mood, appetite, memory and reproduction and fertility.

The ECS involves three core components are endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. Endocannabinoids, also called endogenous cannabinoids, are molecules made by your body. They’re similar to cannabinoids, but they’re produced by your body.

The ECS can also be found in dogs and cats, even chickens.

CBD VS THC

CBD and THC affect different receptors in the brain. Due to this, CBD typically does not have psychoactive effects meaning, it won’t cause you to get high.

THC however, does have psychoactive effects. It is the compound that produces the high that people associate with marijuana.

CBD and THC have the same molecular structure, but there are differences in how these molecules are arranged that are responsible for the differing effects they have. By copying endocannabinoids, they bind with receptors and cause different effects in the body.

IS CBD SAFE?

Due to the boom and hype of CBD a lot of companies have come out with ‘snake oils’. These oils contain little to no CBD and are essentially fake.

Also, unreliability of the purity and dosage of in CBD products is a thing to look out for. A recent study of 84 CBD products bought online showed that more than a quarter of the products contained less CBD than labelled. In addition, THC was found in 18 products.

Always be sure to consult with a doctor and look for reliable brands before purchasing CBD and make sure it is organic, GMO-free and lab tested.
