While ASTM has established some standards for hemp extracts, hemp food seed, and building materials, further development is required to comprehensively address the diverse range of potential applications within the hemp industry.
As a not-for-profit nongovernmental organization, ASTM specializes in developing voluntary consensus standards and collaborates with government authorities to shape legal and regulatory frameworks for various industries.
Building materials emerge as a significant area where alignment with ASTM standards could greatly benefit the hemp sector, particularly in challenging the dominance of traditional construction materials like concrete, known for its environmental impact. Hempcrete, a blend of hemp and lime, has already met ASTM’s standards for fire resistance tests, paving the way for further advancements in testing methodologies to ensure safety and compliance with building regulations.
FIHO is actively engaged in promoting hemp as a sustainable building material through partnerships with organizations such as the United Nations Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction, advocating for carbon neutrality in the built environment.
Moreover, ASTM’s scope extends beyond construction materials to encompass various aspects of agriculture and farming practices, including soil and water quality, fertilizers and pesticides, farming equipment, and post-harvest handling. The organization also develops standards for food safety and quality assurance, including guidelines for assessing hemp seed intended for human consumption.
With all cannabis products falling under ASTM’s Committee D37, which covers both marijuana and industrial hemp, FIHO’s partnership will facilitate the establishment of sub-committees to develop additional hemp standards. FIHO will contribute technical expertise and industry insights, leveraging resulting ASTM standards to uphold quality and consumer safety across the hemp value chain.
