WHAT IS HEMP?

Hemp is the same species of plant as cannabis. However, unlike cannabis, hemp contains low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), less than 0.3% meaning it cannot get you high. It is legal to sell hemp and hemp products in many countries now as it is used to make a wide range of industrial or medicinal products. Hemp is among the fastest growing plants on Earth and the use of hemp dates back to 8000 BC.

Hemp seeds contain gamma linolenic acid (GLA) which is a substance found in breast milk.

Hemp can produce 4 times as much paper as trees can.

Hemp has four times the strength of cotton and uses only 1/20th the amount of water as cotton.

hemp history

Hemp originated in Central Asia. The cultivation for hemp fibre was recorded in China as early as 2800 BCE and was practiced in the Mediterranean countries of Europe early in the Christian era and soon the rest of Europe during the Middle Ages. It was planted in Chile in the 1500s and a century later in North America.

Hemp has been used throughout history for paper, fabrics and medicines. It was also used for shipping rope, sails and canvas’. During WW2 the US government called upon American farmers to plant hemp to help with the war. An estimated 400,000 acres of hemp between 1942 and 1945 was grown. The crop’s strong industrial fibers were used to produce cloth, rope, and other materials.

Federal policies, tightened by the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, banned the production of industrial hemp. According to an industry group, “the 1970 Act abolished the taxation approach [of the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act] and effectively made all cannabis cultivation illegal”.

Hemp seeds have been considered to be a superfood. The seeds have a rich nutritional profile and provide a range of health benefits.

These small, brown seeds are rich in protein, fiber, and healthful fatty acids, including omega-3s and omega-6s. Too add, they have antioxidant effects and may reduce symptoms of numerous ailments, improving the health of the heart, skin, and joints.

The products you can get from hemp seeds include hemp milk, protein powder, hemp seed oil etc.

hemp FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Hemp is one of the fastest growing plants and is very adaptable to soil and climatic conditions. It also requires no herbicides and pesticides to grow. It provides a good break crop for the farmer, giving the land a rest from other crops and helping to prevent disease.

Hemp is six times as strong as cotton, much more resistant to weathering and wear, and more lustrous and absorbent.

The plant captures carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, quickly cleaning the air we breathe as a result. For every tonne of hemp produced, 1.63 tonnes of carbon is removed from the air, making hemp a much more effective sequester of carbon dioxide than trees.

HEMP USES

Hemp can be used for cooking, medicines and even construction. Products like Hempcrete have been made for building houses. Hemp milk is also a popular product and a great vegan nut milk.

One of the biggest uses of hemp however is CBD oil. It is one of the most versatile products you can get from the hemp plant. You can consume CBD orally, which has been proved to provide relief for everything from anxiety to period pain.

Nowadays people are putting CBD into drinks, vapes, gummies, food, and even mascara. CBD, from hemp, can be infused into products to add health benefits. It is hugely beneficial for your body’s largest organ, the skin. Since it interacts with your body in a different way when applied topically, there are a huge range of skincare benefits of CBD, including acne relief, hair treatments, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and even soothing rough patches of eczema or psoriasis.
