Because of the legalisation and hype around CBD, it has become a popular talking point for people, but it has also become a new way to make money. Countless entrepreneurs that want to jump on the ‘next big trend’ have set their eyes upon CBD. It has an estimated market size of a whopping $6.36 billion in 2022.

Some of these entrepreneurs that dive into the CBD market unfortunately don’t have people’s health in mind when starting a CBD business. Due to the lack of regulations, CBD brands can get away with a lot more than your typical food or supplement market. And they have been.

This is one of the biggest setbacks about the CBD industry as it is such a beneficial product just sold wrongly by bad people so they can earn quick buck.

To prove this point, a recent study by Johns Hopkins University, a number of CBD topical cream products were found to have inaccurate and misleading labels.

As noted by Tory Spindle, one of the Johns Hopkins University researchers, “Many of the products were mislabelled. A lot of them had more CBD than they advertised. Many had less CBD than advertised.”

Additionally, many of the creams claimed to only contain CBD, but also contained the psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Someone could unknowingly be taking a CBD product that has THC in it, and test positive in a conventional drug test to be totally unaware and caught off guard,” Spindle said.

To give clearer insight, here are some highlights from the study:

  • 89 of 105 tested products (85%) listed the total amount of CBD in milligrams (mg)
  • Of those 89 products, 16 (18%) contain less CBD than claimed
  • 52 (58%) of the products contained more CBD than claimed
  • 21 (24%) of the products were accurately labelled
  • 4 (11%) of the 37 products that claimed to be THC-free had some level of THC in them

Some brands have even gone to the point to not include any CBD inside it whilst claiming it does. This is an unfortunate case as people buy CBD expecting it to have miraculous effects but end up buying a product that doesn’t have the right amount it claims or even any CBD at all.

This puts people off the products and can even hinder the CBD industry as whole due to distrust. With this in mind, it is important for businesses to sell organic, Non-GMO CBD with the amount it actually claims.

With a special, natural component like CBD, it is crucial to put the health of people first, not the money that way everyone can benefit from it.
